Teaching about Transportation Options is Vital to Age-Friendly Work

In anticipation of the Age-Friendly North Jersey Transportation Symposium on April 3, Andrea Lubin, managing director of the New Jersey Travel Independence Program (NJTIP @ Rutgers), recently discussed the role of education in helping older adults stay independent and engaged by effectively navigating public and community transit.

This event continues a history of collaboration between age-friendly community leaders and NJTIP, which is part of the Alan M. Voorhees Transportation Center at Rutgers University. NJTIP @ Rutgers is partnering with Age-Friendly North Jersey (AFNJ) to raise awareness of transportation resources that can help older adults make safer driving decisions or learn to use transit, community transportation, ride services, and other mobility options.

And the work won’t stop there. NJTIP was recently awarded an age-friendly project grant from the New Jersey Department of Human Services to fund TIP Passaic STEP, a program focused on educating older adults and professionals in Paterson and Wayne on how to navigate public and community transit. Both municipalities, along with Catholic Family & Community Services of Paterson, are partners in the initiative.
