Empowering Mobility: The NJTIP Passaic STEP Paterson Success Story

May 4, 2026 | Equitable Mobility, News, Training

The NJTIP Passaic STEP (Senior Transportation and Engagement Program) continues to make a meaningful difference in the lives of older adults in our community. Most recently, we partnered with the Riverside Vets Recreation Center in Paterson to support residents in navigating mobility challenges. Funded by the NJ Department of Human Services – Division on Aging, the program equips older adults with the tools and confidence to use public transportation. NJTIP helps participants maintain independence—whether visiting friends, attending appointments, or staying active in their communities.

A recent “Transit 101” session highlighted the community’s enthusiasm, with 35 participants learning the fundamentals of safe travel. Participants then applied those skills during a guided bus trip to Glen Rock. While we planned for 10 riders, 13 seniors joined, eager to put their knowledge into practice! They navigated boarding procedures and real-world logistics, moving from classroom learning to confident travel. The Division on Aging covered fares and provided a lunch stipend, creating a shared learning and social experience.

NJTIP @ Rutgers bridges the gap between complex transit systems and the people who rely on them. As part of the Voorhees Transportation Center at Rutgers University, the program goes beyond basic directions by offering a tailored, supportive approach that reflects each participant’s needs and experience. NJTIP @ Rutgers will continue to support the Paterson older adult community as a reliable resource for safe, independent, and connected travel.
