From the upbeat rhythms of jazz clubs to the lively hum of local eateries, Springwood Avenue has historically been a cornerstone of African American culture and community pride in Asbury Park, New Jersey. Today, its legacy lives on in the stories of those who still call it home, keeping its vibrant spirit alive. Springwood Avenue Rising and Interfaith Neighbors have partnered with the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority (NJTPA) and the Alan M. Voorhees Transportation Center (VTC) through the Vibrant Places Program to create a virtual tour showcasing the cultural legacy of Springwood Avenue.
The Springwood Avenue Heritage Walk is a virtual tour that honors the historical significance of this avenue and its pivotal role in mid-20th-century African American life and culture. It explores themes such as the arts, music, entrepreneurship, and advocacy through the lens of community members and showcases historical photos, maps, personal stories, and archives contributed by various project partners, bringing the rich history of Springwood Avenue to life.
Whether you’re a local or a visitor, you’ll be captivated by the stories that have shaped this vibrant corridor. But this virtual experience is just the beginning. The virtual tour paves the way for a forthcoming heritage walk, which will feature interpretive signage along Springwood Avenue, transforming it into a living tribute to the achievements and legacy of Asbury Park’s West Side.
This project doesn’t just preserve history—it also seeks to revitalize the Avenue as a cultural beacon and important mobilizer for the future, fostering partnerships, and amplifying the community’s voice. While streets serve as a transportation connection, they also provide a space to strengthen the relationships between people and encourage economic growth. We celebrate the vibrancy of Springwood Avenue and share its story as a representation of the multi-dimensional function of street space.
