Jeffrey Young is the 2023 recipient of the Mortensen-Voorhees Award for Achievement in Transportation Studies. This award is granted annually to the highest-achieving student with a concentration in transportation at the Edward J. Bloustein School of Urban Planning and Policy. Named after Alan M. Voorhees, a renowned transportation engineer and urban planner, and Robert E. Mortensen, a transportation planner and former CEO of two major railroads, the award honors their significant contributions to the field.
Jeffrey Young graduated from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in 2007 and spent over a decade freelancing in New York and touring the world as a violinist and composer. While at the Bloustein School from 2021-2023, he concentrated in transportation planning and served as the inaugural Director of Communication for the Bloustein Social Justice Committee and as a member of Bloustein Enthusiasts and Advocates for Transportation (BEAT). In summer and fall 2022, he interned at the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission, and in spring and summer 2023, he worked as the Eagleton Institute of Politics Graduate Fellow in the New Jersey Senate Majority Office. Following graduation he has returned to Philadelphia, where he plans to work as a transportation planner and policymaker in the public sector.
