This research will address significant gaps in public engagement guidance currently available to transit agencies seeking to use virtual tools and techniques to facilitate two-way communication with the community, potential passengers, and current riders. The research effort includes national survey, focus groups with public transportation providers and facilitated discussions with practitioners of virtual public engagement with vulnerable communities. Public transit agencies will benefit from research on best practices of virtual public involvement (VPI), particularly prioritizing diversity, equity, and inclusion. The study will generate vital information to support transit agencies of any size or level of experience with VPI, providing guidance and offering methods and practices for effective, inclusive public engagement.
