The Induced Travel Calculator

The Induced Travel Calculator estimates the increase in vehicle travel resulting from expanded road capacity. When new roads or lanes reduce congestion, they often lead to more travel and can quickly return congestion to previous levels. This phenomenon, known as induced travel, also affects travel patterns and locations where people live and work. The Calculator uses historical data and “elasticities of travel” to predict the increase in vehicle-miles of travel and associated carbon emissions. It can also evaluate the realism of existing travel forecasts. Developed by Rutgers University’s VTC, these tools include calculators for New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Minnesota, with additional models under development.
