The New Jersey State Policy Lab has released a new report by VTC’s Robert Noland and Hannah Younes, Crash Data Availability and Best Practices Across the U.S.: Lessons for New Jersey.
In New Jersey, more than 200,000 traffic crashes occur each year, but only fatal crashes are reported to the national Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS). To explore how other states handle crash data, researchers interviewed state DOT staff, transportation advocates, and public health professionals, documenting best practices for making data accessible and useful.
One key finding: publicly available dashboards that allow users to filter crash data by roadway or crash characteristics can help communities see where crashes happen, target safety improvements, and advocate for policy change.
